Alumni on Campus (AoC)
LAHS's Changing Future
Alumni on campus is a timely idea and our class is not alone in joining with students, teachers, administrators, campus staff, parents, area businesses, civic entities, neighbors, etc., to meet the challenges of educating students in the 21st century. After all, educating students takes a community -- the Los Angeles High School (LAHS) community of which we all are stakeholders.
Other LAHS alumni classes reaching their 50th reunions are including 'giving back' as part of their celebrations. With a new infusion of motivated alumni into the LAHS Alumni Association with its 24,000 members, we can play a major role in restoring the 138 year-old, city's namesake high school to the level of excellence it has known for most of its years.
As previously reported, the school is mandated to correct its decade-long pattern of low-performace through the Public Schools Choice process. Since early July teachers, administrators, parents, students and alumni have been meeting weekly to write a proposal to submit to the Board of Education to create a new L.A. High. Proposals also may be coming from outside educational organizations. In early in 2011, LA Unified School District (LAUSD) and the Board will make its choice of a plan. About 15 alumni have participated in the meetings, all agreeing that we are here to stay whatever happens.
